Accountable Wednesday 2

It was decided over the weekend that even though I want to start posting reviews next week. It is better for me and the website to put more thought into what will be posted. The idea is to put up the best work possible and hone writing skills. Please be patient and bear with the random thoughts of this post and possibly 3 more.

This is a review space, and this announcement may feel redundant. I apologize. The books, films/tv series, and graphic novels I will most likely be writing about are specualtive fiction, romance, and cozy mystery. Despite having a Book of the Month subscription, not many will debut or new books. This has been stated before the TBR list is long and I need to make headway on it.

The watch list is also long and will probably be quite nostaligic. I used to love to watch movie trailers to plan what I wanted to watch next in the theatres. I have not felt enticed to go to the movies in a long time. I like to watch international films and TV series, dont be surprised if there is a K-drama review or a South American film review. Netflix seemed to have invested in some interesting stories based in African countries. There is one I have to talk about.

I would like to talk about graphic novels and comics, but there is some research I want to do first.

That is all for now.

Book Review #001

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinetter Kowal

Summary

In the 1950s, Elma York and her husband Nathaniel York were on a short vacation, when a meteorite fell from the sky and crashed into the Chesapeake Bay.  Destroying a large part of the East Coast, but that was not the only devastation.  The whole world is at peril, making the choice for the whole human race.

My Thoughts

I listened to The Calculating Stars when I was in the hospital with Covid-19.  I was on my stomach, struggling to breathe. Traveling to the past and then the stars seemed plausible.  Mary Robinette Kowal did a wonderful job writing this series and narrating the novel. The story didn’t start with this book.  The story started with a short story called The Lady Astronaut of Mars.  The Calculating Stars is a prequel to that short story. Full disclosure I haven’t read the Lady Astronaut of Mars; I haven’t listened to the Relentless Moon yet.  The Calculating Stars is a decent prequel, the best I’ve come across so far.   I admire the skill Mary Robinette Kowal has to make the past, futuristic.

Mary Robinette Kowal is a co-host of a writing podcast called Writing Excuses.  It has been running for almost 16 seasons.  She is not a co-founder but when they brought her in as a host, she introduced the method of writing called the MICE quotient.  She has explained it in the early episodes and just recently did a kind of in-depth class about the MICE quotient in season 16.  It is something I saw throughout the story in The Calculating Stars, and I enjoyed it.

If you listen to Writing Excuses and she says that the Calculating Stars is about women being the computers in NASA.  For the most part she is right, both Dr. Elma York and her husband Dr. Nathaniel York work for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) before the disaster.  Once the International Aerospace Coalition (IAC) is established they resume their roles.  However, there is so much more going on.  Despite Elma being a brilliant mathematician and licensed pilot, who was part of the WASP program during World War II, all the requirements to be part of the astronaut program.  She faces anxiety, misogyny and deals with them in a clever ways.  Elma and other women, some also working as computers in NASA and some are qualifying pilots decide to strive to become the much needed female astronauts during this time of desperate trouble for the world.  They are still underestimated, belittled, and outright disregarded.  In this book, there is grief, racism, and microaggressions. Undaunted Elma speaks about it all, and to be clear she is not always on the right side of the equation.  The interesting part of this is that Elma realizes this, apologizes, and does better.   One of the things I realized with this book is that being wrong does not make you evil.  Sometimes a person needs help, understanding, I think that is one of the many themes in the series.

The Calculating Stars deserved all the awards it won in 2019.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Hollywood is knocking down Ms. Kowal ‘s door for movie rights.    I have given this book five stars.

Words posted on Wednesday

This post is going to be about me recommitting myself to writing reviews or initial thoughts on subjects I find education, interesting and entertaining, all together or separately.  There is so much media out there – books, movies, films, podcasts, that a person can become overwhelmed.  I often wonder if I’ve been on another planet when I find an entertaining or educational gem and they have been producing content for years.  I also wonder what makes something a hit in the past and a miss now.  Why do some fans become viscerally angry about remakes, reimaginings, prequels, and sequels? Why do some adaptations blow up spawning new fans and others burn? There are many platforms that highlight these topics.   I am adding my 5 cents.  I will put serious effort into my thoughts, references, and suggestions.

I have been writing that Wednesday is a review day for a long time.  It was the plan at the beginning of 2021.  I struggled with a rating system.  It may have been noticed in previous reviews, there is a distinct like or dislike.  I will be adding a standard 5-system, silver, and gold.  Not sure yet what will get 5 silver stars and what will get 5 gold.  I have a composition book that has been converted to a reading journal.  I also have shiny washi tape and gold and silver stars of various shapes.  I guess I will have to call it a media journal now, since notes about films, animations and podcasts will be in there as well.   That plan may go south but it is in practice for the next 3 months.

I won’t be releasing a list until January. Some reviews will be on new subjects and some will be revisits. I believe in accountability but I also know myself. This will be the last weird tilted Wednesday post for this year I think. In the future, if one is posted you know something odd went on over the weekend.

This weekend will be Christmas. I hope all goes well for everyone.
