Wednesday’s post

As stated in the update, the move has happened and but the hard part of putting everything where they are supposed to have just started.  It is equally frustrating.  Extended by the days I am not home.

But this is not the purpose of this post.  Wednesdays were for reviews, despite my reading or listening to audiobooks.  I haven’t been able to write any reviews.  I apologize because, in previously written posts, I imply that reviews will be coming very soon.  But real life inserts itself in my plans and some things are abandoned.  My only escape was urban fantasy and contemporary romance.

The upside is that I will not give up on this endeavor.   To keep in line with what I planned. I can briefly talk about the books I have read in the last three weeks.  I am doing this without notes, so it won’t have all the information and there won’t be a lot of detail.  I have mentioned before that I have been listening to and reading the Ordinary Magic series by Devon Monk.  The story is about the quaint “normal” Northwest town of Ordinary Oregon, policed by Delaney Reed and her sister Myra and Jean.  The Reeds are special, they maintain the peace between vacationing gods, supernatural creatures of every kind and oblivious humans, and few that know.  The series is quirky, funny, and thrilling at times. All nine books were narrated by Khristine Hvam.  However, many authors have been persuaded to make their stories graphic audiobooks.  Instead of listening to one person use their voice for various characters, there is a cast of characters, and the story is narrated like a radio play.  I started to listen to the series when the one narrator was available. I bought a book every other week.  Audible is owned by Amazon.  If you buy the book on Kindle for the price you get a somewhat discount on the audible book.  I was able to get the first 3 audiobooks in the series, Death and Relaxation, Devil and Details, and Gods and Ends for less than $10 on audio, it equals out because I spent about $15.00 for all three Kindle books.  For about two weeks, the recordings done by Kristine Hvam and the graphic audio were up side by side.  The original audiobook was longer and on sale, the graphic audio implied that it might be abridged it was a no-brainer that one would be bought.  Kristine Hvam is a great narrator.  I have been listening to her for years.  She is a veteran up, on the pedestal with Robin Miles and Renee Raudman.  There were purchased every other week, then the recordings by Kristine Hvam were pulled.  I could not find them anywhere.  The graphic audios are also sold on Spotify.   I was slightly annoyed since it was messing with my set.  It also kind of worked out in a way.   The first three books were narrated by Khristine Hvam, reading in the first person point of view of Delaney, the Chief of Police in Ordinary.  The fourth book was an anthology, Rock Paper, Scissors.  Each story was told by a sister, Jean, Delaney, and Myra.  The fifth book, Dime a Demon, was narrated by Myra Reed.

My thoughts on the graphic audio version vs the single narrator need to be developed more before I say what I’m going to about it.  There are pros and cons.

I was trying to not burn out on the series, so between each book, I listened to or read something else.  Most of my readings were manhwas on the Tapas app.  I would blast through a couple of newly released romance manhwas just to get the ink promised.  Two of the series I like are on hiatus.

I also started to listen to A Blade So Black by L. L. McKinney.  It is an interesting story.  But it is also a YA story and I have to listen in doses. I have written about my issue with Young Adult books before.

I am waiting for Rogue Familiar and Beastly Kingdom to bring out their audiobooks.  It may not happen, and I find that annoying.  I am sure some fans are pestering the authors. But there might not be enough of us wanting an audiobook for the publisher or independent author to make one.  I have faith that one or both will come eventually, I was able to listen to Fused by Lindsay Buroker and now waiting to see when Wanted the 7th book in the Legacy of Magic will be recorded.  It may come out a few weeks before the next book in the series is released.

And finally, after waiting a year, Piper Rayne has put out The Problem with Second Chances: Lake Starlight Book 1.  This is the Bailey Family series second generation, some of the children born in the first series are all grown up.  The Problem with Second Chances is the much anticipated, heavily hinted romance between Calista Bailey and Rylan Greene.  This book came out earlier this year, I don’t know how I missed it.  However, this kind of works out book 2 will be available in a week.  I won’t gush about it until book three comes out.  Piper Rayne markets their romance series in 3’s.  I don’t know the correct term, but they space them two months apart and insert short catch-up stories. They are also fun to read or listen to.

I didn’t expect to type so much.  But those were my reads/listens.  I did enjoy some craft books on writing and that is the topic of next week’s post.   I hope you all are doing well.

Updates June 19-23

Hello,

Thank you for the likes and follows.

Happy Juneteenth!

As you all know, last week, there was no Monday update. I had some time on Tuesday, and a Wednesday post/update was put up. There were a number of grammatical errors in that Wednesday’s post, they have been fixed. We have officially moved to Brooklyn, and for the summer and the better part of the third quarter will be about settling up with everything. This along with the day job will be the new struggle. One of the possible perks of the move is that my commute may be a little cheaper. Instead of taking the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal, I can just hop on the local subway to my destination. This will be the first week I do this and not sure how I am going to feel about it. Ever since 2020, I’ve been skeptical about mass transit.

For the past two weeks, a new kind of writing project has been started. It was mainly for this website and the Quotes for Writers series. I found that my catalog needed to be upgraded. The old process used to go like this, I see a quote I like online or in a book, and I copy it into a book that I used for that process. If the quote is used in QFW, I copy it and put it in a digital file, under month and year. It was tedious but I believed it helped with memory. When I needed a quote I looked through the book first then made sure it wasn’t a repeat in the QFWs. I’ve been doing this for 3 years. It is the most consistent thing I have done for this blog/website. Cataloging all the quotes I collect helped me find copies and misspellings. Things I’ve done by hand. It also did the thing I liked the best. The quotes inspired me to write and also encouraged me to be well.

I felt the slump. I was beginning to feel depressed about the move and other things going on in my life; then made the conscience thought to deny it all. This poor choice reflected in me by avoiding the stories and essays I wanted to produce. I also quit things too soon another struggling flaw. Revisiting the collected quotes posted or not and wellness and other aspects of health worked.

This week, there will be a scramble for the Wednesday post, the overall goal is to make an effective plan for that content. The quotes for last week will be up this week and the pictures are going to be flowers that come out in June. I will be working on the writing projects Connection Lost and Gothic.

In reading news, while going through my audiobook, library I came across an book I bought but did not listen too. It is A Blade so Black by L.L. McKinney. I don’t know why I didn’t listen to the book when I bought it. McKinney, also wrote the comic Nubia: The Real One and I remember being more interested in that book. Now that the series is complete, I will leisurely listen to it and share my opinions in the future. I am also still listening to the Ordinary Magic series by Devon Monk. The series has an interesting set up, I first saw with Ilona Andrews in the Hidden Legacy series 1 & 2. I plan to talk about it when things get settled. Overall I am enjoying all the fiction books, I’m reading. It has been decided to go through the audiobook library and revisit books that were on pause. Many of these books are craft books. It has been said many times by many people, that to write well you have to read a lot. This has been another struggling flaw of mine. Finding comfortable time to read, audiobooks help but they can’t do it all. I’m a writer. I can’t be avoiding words on the page.

That is all for now. I hope these rambling words entertain and inspire. Let’s all be kind to each other and not miss any positive opportunity.

P.S.: The picture is an AI generated image, I asked for honeysuckle and got these lovely flowers in a vase. If you know what they are please let me know thanks.

Wednesday Update Late Edition

Hello,

Thank you for the likes and follows.

There are no QFWs this week, and I decided to combine the Wednesday post and update because it is going to be quick and dirty. Prepare yourself for grammatical errors.

Over the weekend, we moved all the heavy furniture out of the house and placed it into the apartment. The apartment is a hot mess, and then I had to go to work. My current day job is a live-in position. I’m here five days out of the week. The pay is alright, but that is a lot of time, and it is starting to give me fatigue.

The upside to this situation is that I do have time to write. This post is a result of it. I heard two things that disappointed me. I feel the need to share a bit. I was following a channel on YT. I like stories and the craft of stories. I found myself listening to people discuss the Lore of Magic: the Gathering D&D, the Elder Scrolls, etc. Magic: the Gathering is a card game over 20 years old they have a lot of lore. I was indulging in various channels that explain different aspects of the game. They all have a niche. I don’t plan to play the game ever. I like the worlds or planes and the world-building that goes along with it. A content creator made a video explaining his dislike of the new installation of the game. The content creator’s issues were valid to him, but the terms he used to express them were disappointing to me. I will not be sharing my time on his videos any longer. I don’t know if other people left a comment on his video agreeing with him or not. One of my goals in wellness is not to endure things that will upset my well-being. Therefore, his channel is on the X-list.

The other disappointing news that I came across was on YouTube again. It was short, and I can’t remember who produced the video, but it was about the Disney live-action Little Mermaid movie. I don’t know how true this is, but the international box office sales are not making the dollars other Disney live-action films were making, their numbers were lower. Especially in China, a reviewer from there stated that if Disney wanted to produce a fairy tale film with a black female lead, they should do it with original stories instead of switching. This is a paraphrase since the short video is quick, and I had no desire to rewatch it.

However, I take issues with the words. First, it would be great if Disney or Pixar were interested in original POC mermaid fairy tales. I don’t have the stats, I know there are mermaid stories all over the world. It would be great to see them in animation or any other form of media, but we all know that corporations like Disney are looking at the dollar signs, not feel-good vibes.

My other issue with these two subjects tie-in together. I hope I am able to make them clear. First, I want to make this clear I don’t have the sociological or anthropological background to write what I am about it. I’m sure others have said or written it better.

I don’t always agree with race-switching. I don’t even like the world race. It is a failed construct that is destroying the world. However, it has to be dealt with. People of color, Black people should have a right to include themselves in fantasy stories without other people flipping tables about it. This may seem like a divisive thing to say, but not every Black person has emotional ties to Africa. I write this from personal experience; there was a time in my life when I didn’t feel any ties to any of the cultural groups I grew up in. I wasn’t a Black American with a history and relatives in the South of the United States. Nor was I West Indian enough to claim my parents’ heritage. Figuring this out about myself took some time. Reading stories from all over the world helped. It most likely inspired me to write my own. Sometimes, Black people like and want to be elves or fairies without cause or explanation.

Companies want as much money as we can give them. If you don’t like what they are doing, don’t give them your money. I believe in the idea that not every story is not for everyone. There are going to be stories that connect in the present right now, and then there are stories that are for the future-you or a future person, who will need that story more than you ever did. That includes film adaptations. Yes, even the bad ones.

That is all I have to say about this subject. Sorry if it was long or confusing. I haven’t seen the live-action Little Mermaid. Moving has taken up all my weekends. It is on my To-Do List as soon as I have a free weekend. This rant took so many words. I am working on Connection Lost again, Yay! I started a new urban fantasy series, it is called Ordinary by Devon Monk. I am on the fence about it. So my week is full.

This is finally all I have to write. I hope you are all doing well. We need kindness more than ever. Have a great rest of the week.

P.S. Quotes For Writers and the Monday Updates should resume next week.
